New Medicine Service

The New Medicine Service (NMS) is a free NHS service that provides support for people with long-term conditions newly prescribed a medicine to help improve medicines adherence; it is initially focused on particular patient groups and conditions.

The aim of this service is to improve patient adherence to treatment and subsequently reduce medicine wastage. Also, to reduce hospital admissions from adverse drug reactions by identifying them in the early stages of the treatment. During your consultations with the pharmacist, you will also be advised on lifestyle interventions that will help with the management of your conditions.

When you are started on a new medicine for Antiplatelet/Anticoagulant therapy, Asthma/COPD, Hypertension or Diabetes, you might be eligible for the NMS service. A member of our team will offer you this service and ask for your written consent to participate in the service. One of our pharmacists will provide you with some general information about your new medication and the service during the initial consultation and will arrange with you a phone or face-to-face follow-up consultation in 2 weeks’ time. During your follow-up consultation, the pharmacists will ask you about how you got on with your medication, explore any issues you might have encountered and provide relevant advice and support. The pharmacist will arrange a final meeting in 1-2 weeks’ time to ensure that you have a good understanding of your new treatment and that you aren’t having any adverse effects.

Medicine Use Review

Medicine Use Review is free of charge to patients suffering from certain long-term conditions. It is usually conducted at the pharmacy every 12 months. In some cases where the pharmacist believes that it would be beneficial for you, it can be carried out under different conditions and intervals.

The aim of an MUR is to identify and explore any issues you might have with taking your medication as prescribed, any side effects you might be experiencing and to answer any queries you might have. The pharmacist will go through all the medication that you are currently taking, ensuring that you know what each medication is for, and with devices such as inhalers, to go through the correct technique to ensure that you get the most benefit out of your medication. Another important aspect of a Medicine Use Review is to provide healthy living advice. This includes advice on a healthy diet, weight management, exercise, alcohol consumption and smoking cessation guidance.

One of our pharmacists will carry out a review with you in a consultation room where you will have the opportunity to discuss any issues you might have. The pharmacist will provide you with information and advice and will refer you to the GP if required. Enquire today to find out if you qualify for this service. We are passionate about helping our patients to get the maximum benefit from their medication.

Cystitis/UTI

Different parts of your urinary tract, including your bladder (cystitis), urethra (urethritis), or kidneys (kidney infection) can be affected by urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Bladder infections are very common and not normally serious if treated quickly. However, the infection can cause more serious issues if it spreads to the kidneys. Most UTIs though can be easily treated with antibiotics.
